Health Tech (Hearing)

While the incumbent is under the supervision of the professional Audiology staff, he/she is required to interact with a high level of independence, making appropriate service delivery decisions and seeking clarification and/or assistance when appropriate. The Health Technician provides support in four functional areas. These are:
(1) hearing aid troubleshooting and repairs, electroacoustic evaluation, ear impressions related to hearing aid repairs, tracking of repair items; (2) hearing aid and earmold certification and tracking; (3) supply orders and management; and (4) Clerical responsibilities. When hearing aids are delivered to the clinic, the technician is responsible for checking the hearing aids to insure that all ordered components are present and that the hearing aids are operational and ready to be issued. The technician is responsible for certifying the hearing aid and entering the certifying information into ROES. The technician is responsible for using electro-acoustical diagnostic equipment to assess the electronic functioning of hearing aids and to report the finding to the audiologist. The incumbent is responsible for accurately recording and documenting the outputs of the diagnostic system that describes the hearing aid's frequency response. Based on this analysis, he or she decides when it is necessary to return the hearing aid for repair. The hearing aid technician is responsible for completing routine hearing aid fittings using computerized equipment. The technician is responsible for using real-ear technology to match the hearing aid output to the veteran's hearing needs. As part of the hearing aid fitting, the technician instructs that veteran in the proper use, rights and responsibilities and safety measures for safe and effective use of the hearing aid and any assistive listening devices that are issued. The incumbent is responsible for routine repairs of hearing aids delivered or mailed to the Audiology Clinic. During clinic hours, she or he meets with veterans on a one-to-one basis to solve hearing aid problems. In this capacity, the incumbent provides primary level trouble shooting and repair for veterans who are experiencing hearing aid problems. The ability to succeed in this role requires effective communication with patients with communication disorders. Services commonly provided by the technician include the evaluation of the hearing aid's function and fit, changing of batteries, cleaning of electrical contacts, removal of impacted cerumen from the aid, replacing ear mold tubing, inspecting and replacing cords, and counseling the veteran in optimal use and proper methods of care for the instruments.
