Surgical Technician

Functions as a primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures such as open heart, thoracic, major vascular, neurosurgery, microsurgery, transplantation, gynecology, urology, etc.; Sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered, fiber optic, laparoscopic, arthroscopy and urologic equipment, microscopes, lasers, recording devices, and other operating room supplies and equipment; Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical setups; Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the surgical procedure and anticipates the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time; Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment; Assists team members with care of the patient, i.e. positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies; Handles all specimens appropriately; Performs sponge and instrument counts to verify accuracy; Responsible for the accountability for all surgical instruments and equipment during the surgical procedure; Assists the surgeon by performing such procedures as preparing skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, and cutting sutures; Prepares prostheses and surgical devices during procedures; Assists in training students and new operating room staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and OR procedures to include the scrub role in surgical procedures; Functions as a Genito-Urinary Health Technician, appropriately handling urological instrumentation and equipment; Provides transportation of patients to and from the OR, as assigned; Assesses equipment needs and maintains adequate stock of supplies and materials; Assists surgical team members in quality improvement activities; and, Performs all other duties as assigned. Experience:
You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is experience that requires application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques to successfully perform the duties of a Surgical Technician including providing assistance to a surgical team during surgical procedures; utilizing knowledge of highly technical medical instruments, human anatomy, and aseptic technique to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery; functioning as the primary scrub person handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures; preparing, organizing, and maintaining highly complex sterile surgical setups; observing and responding to each stage of a surgical procedure to anticipate the needs of the surgeon; handling specimens appropriately; and cleaning and decontaminating instruments before and after procedures. NOTE:

Successfully completed one (1) full year of graduate education (or 18 semester hours) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE:

Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Surgical Technician position such as anatomy and physiology, surgical technology, aseptic techniques, etc. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE:

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
