Police Officer (Instructor)

Perform work in the development and delivery of courses for training programs. The Instructor institutes' changes which involve adapting current instructional material to fit criteria focused on the jurisdiction, level of experience and complications observed. Additionally, the Instructor will oversee senior instructors (firearms, ground defense, active threat, etc.) in providing guidance and evaluating their courses. Gathers relevant information, analyzes pertinent data, develops findings, and makes recommendations that are largely modeled on precedents. The Police Officer (Instructor) performs duties, as needed, involving the instruction of training courses or the modification of course contents and/or materials. The Police Officer (Instructor) will ensure training is conducted in accordance with all applicable policies and regulatory requirements, ensures training is properly documented in accordance with VA and EPVAHCS requirements. Coordinates or performs regular program audits to ensure police service remains compliant with agency level program requirements, which include conformance to applicable laws, regulations, directives, handbooks, SOP's and other relevant source documents. Assesses police policies, procedures, training, and completed work with a focus on identifying, preventing and correcting unsatisfactory conditions or elements which influence the quality of services provided. Coordinates and/or conducts program audits and inspections to assess and identify areas where improvements need to be made and reports findings and suggested corrective measures to the Chief of Police. Plans, coordinates and conducts a wide variety of drills to assess performance capabilities. Identify best practices and determine where corrective action needs to occur. Coordinates with other departments, program managers, supervisors, and staff as needed to complete the required work. Takes steps to correct deficiencies as appropriate and recommends corrective action to other supervisors, managers, chiefs when higher level involvement is necessary to resolve policy or interdepartmental conflict. Develops and recommends performance measures with measurable outcomes, tracks performance and generates all necessary reports. VA police officers are a vital part of ensuring a safe and secure environment across VA. VA police officers not only carry out their policing duties but are often the first to interact with and assist Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities on a daily basis. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements:
The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous, physical exertion, such as frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, walking while on patrol, running while pursuing observed violators or suspects and eloping committed patients, crouching or crawling in restrictive areas during search, standing for prolonged periods of time, and frequent exposure to inclement weather conditions, such as rain and extreme cold in winter and extreme heat in the summer while on outside patrol. Extreme physical exertion to restrain felons or psychotic patients in a safe manner, and lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds. LAUTENBERG AMENDEMENT:
This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 922(g)(91)). Candidates who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not qualified for this position. Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment (Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1001). ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE OFFICER POSITION:
1. Applicants must possess a current, valid State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely. 2. VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory firearm qualification/certification. 3. New VA Police Officers are required to attend and successfully pass an 10-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within 90 days of entry on duty. 4. A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.5. A medical examination is required. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants:
good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.6. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
