Credit Quality Manager

Overview:
This position operates in the 2nd line of defense as part of the Credit Risk Management Department and assists the Credit Risk Manager in the monitoring, analysis, and general oversight of the Commercial criticized portfolio from the perspective of oversite of 1st line of defense monitoring activities.
Ensuring that loans in this space are properly risk rated, with proper accrual designation and charge-off recognition in a timely fashion is critical functionality.
From a governance perspective, this position works to ensure the basic safety and soundness of the loan portfolio and review and challenge of the activities of the 1st line of defense.
Additionally ensuring alignment to the banks risk appetite, risk profile and credit policy are primary deliverables with this position.
Primary
Responsibilities:

Oversee and direct a staff of Credit Quality Analysts that are primarily focused on 2nd LOD oversight of the commercial criticized portfolio.

Proactively monitor and test the monitoring the of Criticized loans (for deterioration (or improvement) and make recommendation to management for non-accrual activity and charge-off recognition.

Responsible for reviewing, testing and challenge of the 1st Line of Defense execution of the criticized asset review process inclusive of the maintenance of the Problem Loan Management Reports, reporting, analytics, risk rating changes, governance, etc.

Develop near term forecasts for movements into and out of non-accrual status and also potential charge-offs and recoveries
Act as 2nd line of defense point of contact for portfolio or individual loan discussions with internal department and senior and executive level managers and external parties such as bank examiners, external auditors and rating agencies.

Participate on due diligence and merger activities from a review and challenge perspective by conducting review and challenge of the 1st line analysis, file reviews, risk ratings and credit marks for portfolios of interest.

Exercise managerial authority over staff with respect to staffing, hiring, salary recommendations, performance management, employee development, and termination.

Effectively manage cross-functional initiatives, act as a change agent.

Ability to motivate and influence staff outside of direct-reporting line.

Effectively handle multiple priorities and to set and establish priorities for junior members of team.

Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.

Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

Understand and adhere to the Companys risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Companys Risk Appetite.
Design, implement, maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis.
Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.

Complete other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities :
Results/Actions impact the Bank's short- and long-term operations, revenues and profitability.

Must collaborate with business partners (within and external to Credit Risk) on compliance and regulatory issues, Credit Policy, Finance, Credit Automation, Scorecard Development, Validation and Management.

Communicates with executive management.

Provide assistance/support to the Credit Risk Manager as needed
Coordinates and closely collaborates with the Credit Review, Portfolio Management, Special Assets and Audit departments as appropriate.
Supervisory/ Managerial
Responsibilities:
Oversee department inclusive of multiple levels of professional employees.
Responsible for assisting in staff recruitment, training and development as well as performance management and recommendations related to performance, promotions and overall employee relations.
Requires the ability to build consensus and move projects forward despite roadblocks and competing functional priorities.
Motivate and develop staff to manage and monitor loss identification in the Banks commercial portfolio.
Effectively manage staff and promote professional growth.
Effectively direct cross-functional initiatives, act as a change agent etc.
Ability to motivate and influence staff outside of direct reporting line.
Education and Experience Required:
Bachelors Degree in accounting, finance or other related field or equivalent in experience and (8) years of commercial lending, loan review, credit analysis or similar experience is required, or in lieu of a degree at least twelve (12) years of commercial lending, loan review, credit analysis or similar experience is required.
Three (3) years of supervisory experience in managing professional level employees.
