Engineer Trainee (Civil/Transportation)

As an Engineer Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation), salary grade 20. To advance to Assistant Engineer, you must have obtained proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) AND successfully completed the requirements of the traineeship to the satisfaction of the appointing authority. At the discretion of the appointing authority, early advancement to Assistant Engineer is possible if you have obtained your FE and successfully completed twelve months of the traineeship. It is your responsibility to notify the appointing authority's personnel office upon obtaining proof of passing the FE. For candidates who are being appointed and who have already obtained their FE, they must serve twelve months of the traineeship to advance to Assistant Engineer. We have two (2) positions available:
1.) Thruway Project Engineer Under the direction of a Professional Engineer (Construction Manager, CM), the incumbent will function as Thruway Project Engineer (TPE) and be responsible for the following:
o Acting as the on-site representative of the Authority to administer smaller, more routine capital construction contracts and, in partnership with the contractor, to achieve the established goals of the construction program. o Assigned as a TPE on smaller construction projects or will fill the role of an Office Engineer or Chief Inspector on a larger project. o Responsible for supervision of the inspection of contract work, reviewing contracts and specifications, collecting and analyzing engineering data dealing with public concerns, complying with and promoting safety & health requirements on the job, materials testing, preparing daily work reports and/or a daily diary, field survey work and contract administration. o In charge of and directly supervise other inspection staff and deal directly with the contractor. OR 2.) Assistant Team Leader:
The Assistant Team Leader will be under direct supervision and guidance of a Team Leader and will be responsible for:
o Assisting in the structural and safety inspections of bridges, overhead signs / high mast lighting, bridge culverts, retaining walls and gantries. Inspections will be in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards, NYSTA policies, and when applicable, NYSDOT policies. o Field inspections, accessing structures via various methods (ladder, platform, aerial lifts, UBIU), generation of reports, compilation of schedules, inventory updates and any other tasks deemed necessary to ensure the sufficient delivery of the structure inspection program for the NYSTA.

Salary Range:
From $57803 to $82012 Annually
Minimum Qualification
Either 1 of 2:
Applicant has obtained a bachelor's degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Planning and Engineering, or Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above listed engineering degrees. OR 2. Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals in Engineering Examination (FE) exam AND one year of engineering experience with transportation projects related to highways/roadways, railroad, bridges, airports, waterways, building structures, or traffic management and safety systems. Selected candidate will be required to take the Civil Service Engineer Trainee (Civil/Transportation) examination and obtain a reachable score on the resulting eligible list to be appointed permanently.
